Bowers' regains title for fifth time

Lincolnshire's
county square chess team captain Francis Bowers has
clinched the eighth World Circular Chess Championship
title for the fifth time.
The engineer, from Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, took
the first prize of £200 from sponsors Lindum Group
and Beaver Design after triumphing in all five rounds.
He beat Leicestershire's George Jelliss, Devon's Mike
Hore, Lincolnshire's Rob Stevens, Newark player Mike
Clark, and former Amsterdam youth chess champion Herman
Kok. The £50 second prize went to David Carew,
representing Lincolnshire.

Mr Bowers, who won the circular crown in 1997, 1998, 1999 and
2001, congratulated the Lincoln-based Circular Chess Society,
and the sponsors, for staging the annual event.
It was held in the historic mansion, and former official residence
of the Bishops of Lincoln, at Edward King House, next to Lincoln
Cathedral.
The tournament's runner-up was David Carew, representing Lincolnshire.
He received £50 after winning four matches and drawing
a game against third placed Neil McInnes. Neil, from Keighley,
Yorkshire, represents Britain in square board events run by
Nato and the Combined Services organisation.
Players from as far afield as Devon, Aberdeen and Hertfordshire
took part in the circular chess competition. There were also
competitors representing Crete, Australia and Ireland.

The
event was opened by the Rt Worshipful, the Mayor of Lincoln,
Councillor Gary Hewson. He and City Sheriff, Jeff Boyall,
drew the lots for the opening round, before challenging
each other to a game themselves.
The Mayor, who told competitors and onlookers that he
had not played a game of chess since his schooldays, duly
triumphed. |
