Education secretary praises competitors
The Lindum Group 2004 World
Circular Chess Championship
Bishop Edward King House, Lincoln, England, Sunday, 16 May,
2004

Winners
and contestants of the annual tournament received a
special VIP message of congratulations at the event
staged next to historic Lincoln Cathedral.
The Rt Hon Charles Clarke MP, Secretary of State for
Education, added his praise to participants, including
Peterborough engineer Francis Bowers, who beat off challengers
for the global circular crown by winning all five of
his rounds.
He defeated Leicestershire's John Jelliss, Newark player
Mike Clark, fellow Peterborough player Rob Stevens,
Dutchman Jan van Gemeren, and former Amsterdam junior
chess champion Herman Kok in the final round.

Mr Bowers, who received £200 prize money from event sponsors
city firms Lindum Group, Baraka Packaging Services, Beavor Pine
Furnishings Design, and H W Franklin Jewellers, said: "It
is the eighth time I have played the competition.
"There were some hard games and I would like to see more
people coming along to watch and to take part.

"It
is a unique tournament. It is a friendly atmosphere and
there are a decent standard of players as well."
Players descended on Lincoln Minster from the Netherlands,
Ireland, Crete, and from around the UK.
The message from Mr Clarke was read out at the presentation
of awards by Circular Chess Society president Dave Reynolds
(pictured handing the trophy and £200 winner's cheque
to Mr Bowers). |
In his letter, Mr Clarke said that while ministerial duties
had kept him away from the event, he was a keen chess player
and was pleased to pass on his best wishes to all of the participants
and to the organisers.
The tournament was opened by the Mayor of Lincoln, Councillor
Donald Nannestad, and City Sheriff Peter Robinson, who drew
lots for the first round. They then took time out to try a game
for themselves. The civic contest was won by the Mayor.
