Going Dutch: Former champ regains title


 Dutch businessman Herman Kok has regained the World Circular Chess crown, following a knock-out contest in the grounds of historic Lincoln Castle.

The former Amsterdam junior square chess champion, who last won the WCC title in 2000, claimed the trophy and £200 cash prize after beating Peterborough engineer Francis Bowers in a 15-minute speed-play match.

The knock-out game was staged after both men gained maximum points from the formal four rounds, which were open to all of the 20 competitors who entered the tournament.

It was a close-run match, with both players down to Kings and Pawns, which ended with Mr Bowers losing on the clock.

Organisers welcomed four new entrants from Cardiff and Edinburgh, Ian Lewis, Mark Rye, Tom Maxwell and Emma-Jayne Hagerty, who have embarked on a mission to enter a series of world championship events staged across the country, including cheese-rolling, wellington-boot throwing, worm-charming and pooh-sticks.

The £50 consolation prize for the best new entrant went to Howard Jones, of Lincoln, who won three out of his four games.

It was the second time that the circular chess world title was contested on the castle lawns, since the annual championship began in 1996.

Circular Chess Society president David Reynolds paid tribute to tournament sponsor Lindum Group Ltd, which provided a marquee in the grounds for the event and refreshments for competitors.

The tournament was dedicated to a regular competitor who sadly passed away recently, Charles Vermes, of Derbyshire.

Results

The 11th annual World Circular Chess Championship, staged at Lincoln Castle on Saturday, 20 May 2006, was attended by 20 competitors from the the UK, Ireland and Holland.
