"Let's
talk about ... chess!"
Dave Reynolds, (re)inventor of
the game
|
|
"I
got into this because I am interested in history. It fascinated
me to think of monks playing the game in their cells at
night. I wondered how circular chess might work, so I
made a cardboard version, took it to the pub, and challenged
Rob to a match.
"It is a much more exciting version than square chess,
because the game takes place on two fronts, and clockwise
as well as anti-clockwise. It is a mind-bender."

Rob Stevens,
1996 champion
|

"The championship
was broadcast on the TransWorld Sport television programme
in the 1990s, and we have had some very good players
coming from all over the country.
"We looked at the prize money on offer in the normal
county tournaments around the country, and we easily
match them. But the most important thing is that everyone
who comes along, really enjoys the day."

Herman Kok, 2006/2000 champion
|
|
"I
was in a square chess club and I heard about round chess.
I thought it was a load of nonsense at first. But when
I played Rob it was actually good fun.
"Square chess players are a little bit serious. We
are definitely competitive, but you can have a laugh at
the same time. You need a combination of being able to
play well and hold your drink."
